چکیده

A standardized analysis of wind retrieval collocations from a set of ERS (C-band VV polarization) and RADARSAT (C-band HH polarization) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) open ocean images is presented. The field validation opportunities, carried out over the past eight years, provided collocated (in time and space) in situ validation data consisting of wind vector and ocean wave spectrum measurements. In this paper, we present validation results for the SAR-estimated wind direction and speed. The direction estimate is based on the orientation of coherent atmospheric structures in the SAR image. The speed estimate is based on a scatterometer wind retrieval model for C-band VV polarization (specifically, CMOD_IFR2) modified for HH polarization using available polarization ratios. We consider several C-band polarization ratios including empirical and theoretical forms. Use of CMOD_IFR2 and a polarization ratio according to Kirchhoff is recommended for RADARSAT SAR ocean wind retrieval.

Wind field structure and speed from Radarsat SAR images

It has been well established that Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images over the ocean can provide wind information over small spatial scales. SAR image data can be used quantitatively as an imaging scatterometer if the SAR is calibrated and a suitable wind retrieval model is available [Vachon & Dobson 1996; Wackerman et al. 1996; Fetterer et al. 1998]. Canada’s Radarsat SAR (C-band HH polarisa...

Preliminary Assessment of Wind and Wave Retrieval from Chinese Gaofen-3 SAR Imagery

The Chinese Gaofen-3 (GF-3) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) launched by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) has operated at C-band since September 2016. To date, we have collected 16/42 images in vertical-vertical (VV)/horizontal-horizontal (HH) polarization, covering the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) buoy measurements of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) aro...

An Empirical Algorithm for Wave Retrieval from Co-Polarization X-Band SAR Imagery

In this study, we proposed an empirical algorithm for significant wave height (SWH) retrieval from TerraSAR-X/TanDEM (TS-X/TD-X) X-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) co-polarization (vertical-vertical (VV) and horizontal-horizontal (HH)) images. As the existing empirical algorithm at X-band, i.e., XWAVE, is applied for wave retrieval from HH-polarization TS-X/TD-X image, polarization ratio (PR...

On Surface Wind Speed Retrieval from Sar Imagery in West Pacific Ocean

With the development of climate change and global warming, more and more severe tropical storms, hurricanes and typhoons tend to emerge[nature], leading devastating threat and damage to human lives and social productions. Accurate forecasting of storm track and intensity is of vital importance to help evacuation and hence decrease losses. However, the accuracy of storm forecast heavily depends ...

Performance of ENVISAT ASAR for Operational Ocean Wind Field Retrieval

Today, several scatterometers (SCATs) are in orbit, which enable to measure wind fields with a resolution of up to 25 km on a global and operational basis independent on daylight and cloudiness. The SCATs were originally not designed to measure high resolution wind fields and therefore make it difficult to measure the highly spatially variable winds, which are especially important to measure in...
